RACOON FHIR Workshop: Empowering Healthcare Research via Enhanced Interoperability

This week Brainlab hosted the RACOON FHIR Workshop with around 40 participants. The workshop was organized by Mint Medical and supported by Snke OS, with the primary goal of training computer scientists from the RACOON Network in SMART on FHIR topics using the infrastructure provided by Snke OS. During the workshop, participants were offered valuable hands-on sessions in which they could create their own SMART on FHIR applications. In addition, there were presentations highlighting the use of containers in modern architectures and their integration into CI/CD pipelines.

"Our ultimate goal is to empower research by bringing more projects to the RACOON platform and increasing collaboration with more tech partners. However, in order to keep the necessary IT infrastructure complexity at the lowest possible level, it is essential to rely on standards. FHIR and especially SMART on FHIR enable exactly this - a uniform way of data flow and standardization of how applications can be provided on the RACOON platform. With this workshop, we aimed to introduce the technologies to the computer scientists and the tech partners so that they can easily integrate their own applications into the RACOON infrastructure."

Johannes Kast,

R&D Director of Mint Medical and one of the workshop's organizers

A few words about RACOON

RACOON, or the Radiological Cooperative Network, is an initiative from the Netzwerk Universitätsmedizin that aims to establish a Germany-wide infrastructure for the structured collection of radiological data. All university hospitals in Germany are partners in this joint project. External research institutes complete the list of network partners. As an industry partner, Mint Medical provides the technological basis for the collection and analysis of radiological data. mint Lesion™ plays a central role in the project, forming the backbone of the RACOON infrastructure and making all patient information documented on-site (e.g., lab values, treatment history, etc.) available to the users via interfaces between the reporting platform and other local data sources (RIS, HIS, etc.) The project initially started as a platform for the acquisition and analysis of radiological data from COVID-19 cases; however, due to its high scaling potential, the infrastructure is now being extended to other areas of application.

What is FHIR, and what does it offer to the healthcare industry?

FHIR stands for Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources. It is a standard for exchanging healthcare information electronically, designed to facilitate interoperability and data exchange between different healthcare systems and applications. FHIR is developed by Health Level Seven International, a standards development organization focused on healthcare interoperability. SMART on FHIR is an extension of FHIR that enables the development of third-party applications that can securely access data from EHR systems and present it to the user in a user-friendly and meaningful way. It uses the FHIR standard to exchange data and provides a secure authentication process. By adopting FHIR, healthcare organizations and applications can achieve better data exchange, improve clinical decision-making, and enhance patient care by making health information accessible and usable across different systems and disciplines.
